Responsible gambling

Gambling can be enjoyable when it's kept in perspective — but it can also cause real harm. This page covers the practical tools and services available in the UK for anyone who wants to stay in control or get help.

Deposit limits and session controls

Every UKGC-licensed operator is required to offer deposit limits, session time limits and loss limits. You can set these when you open an account, or change them at any time through account settings. Reducing a limit takes effect immediately. Increasing one is subject to a 24-hour cooling-off period — a deliberate pause built into the rules to prevent impulsive decisions.

Self-exclusion through GamStop

GamStop is the UK's national online self-exclusion scheme. Registering is free and takes a few minutes. Once active, your exclusion applies to every UKGC-licensed online gambling site — not just one. You can choose a minimum exclusion period of six months, one year or five years. During that period, participating operators are required to prevent you from opening a new account or accessing an existing one.

Taking a break (time-outs)

If you want a shorter break without committing to self-exclusion, all licensed operators must offer a time-out option — typically from 24 hours up to several weeks. During a time-out, you can't log in or bet, but the account remains in place. It's a useful option if you want a pause without permanently closing your account.

Warning signs worth knowing

Some signs that gambling may be becoming a problem: spending more than you planned, chasing losses to try to win back money, borrowing to fund gambling, lying to people close to you about how much you gamble, or finding that gambling is the main thing you look forward to. None of these is a moral failing — they're recognised patterns. Getting help early makes a practical difference.

What gambling isn't

Gambling is not a reliable way to make money. The house edge means that over enough time, most players lose. Past results don't affect future ones — each spin of a slot or outcome at roulette is independent. No strategy changes the underlying maths, and no 'system' overcomes a negative expected return. Keeping that in mind makes it easier to treat gambling as entertainment with a cost, rather than as an income source.
